I recently realized just how unique each ostomate’s journey truly is. As the administrator of a growing Facebook group, I’ve noticed a common theme: no two paths to an ostomy are the same.
Some are still adjusting to life with a new stoma, navigating both physical and emotional changes, while others have lived with theirs for years—developing routines, confidence, and a deep sense of self-acceptance.
On the physical side, there’s learning how to care for a stoma, adapting to body changes and finding the right products that provide comfort and confidence. Each experience is deeply personal and unique. Even our paths to becoming ostomates vary widely, whether due to chronic conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, cancer, injuries, birth defects, or other medical reasons. The diversity within the ostomy community is vast and no two experiences are the same.
Then there’s the emotional journey - the mindset shift that comes with living with an ostomy. The feelings of self-doubt, body image concerns, and the fear of being "different." Some embrace their ostomy quickly, while others take time to adapt and figure out how to navigate the highs and lows. Some days, we feel strong and empowered, while others we struggle.
That’s why community and connection is so important. If you’re looking for a supportive space where you can connect with others on similar journeys, we invite you to join the Ostomy Body Positive Facebook Group. We host live events covering a variety of ostomy-related topics, interviews with ostomates from around the world, and discussions that inspire confidence and support.
No matter where you are on your journey, you don’t have to go through it alone.
